STATE STREET RESEARCH AWARDED NEW INSTITUTIONAL BUSINESS FROM CONNING



BOSTON, MA., December 13, 2000- State Street Research & Management Company announced today that the firm has partnered with Conning Asset Management Company to provide subadvisory investment management for approximately $300 million in assets for certain active equity investment management disciplines, including small cap value, mid cap growth, large cap value, and balanced. This further reinforces State Street Research's increasing presence in the subadvisory marketplace.

MetLife owns both Conning and State Street Research. Conning is one of the largest asset managers specializing in insurance company and related financial institution investments in the United States. The company is also a nationally respected provider of institutional research and research publications on the insurance industry, a leading source of private equity capital to financial services companies, and a national source of commercial mortgage services to the financial services community.

State Street Research & Management Company, with a money management history dating back to 1924, is one of the nation's first investment management organizations. The Boston-based firm is a subsidiary of MetLife. As of October 31, 2000, State Street Research managed $54 billion in assets, of which $34 billion represented institutional client assets. The firm manages institutional assets for corporate, public, educational and charitable plans, as well as union plans; mutual funds for over 530,000 shareholder accounts; and individually managed accounts for affluent investors.
